When Can Indoor Plants Go Outside?Tips for Thriving in Warm Weather + a Post-Holiday Check-In

We talked about this a couple months ago, but since when can indoor plants go outside? is still one of the top questions this time of year (and I’ve seen a lot of y’all making the move—myself included), now’s the perfect time to revisit it.

While summer hasn’t officially started, the weather is warming up and your plants are probably enjoying that fresh outdoor air. But taking them outside is just the first step—now let’s make sure they’re set up to thrive.

Here’s what to keep in mind now that your indoor plants are outside:

  • Start with the right spot.
Snake plants are tougher than they look—they grow wild in places like Florida and can handle bright sun. But even sun-lovers need time to adjust. Ease them into outdoor light, especially if they were living in low-light corners inside. For shade-preferring plants like ZZs or calatheas, go for dappled light or a covered porch.

  • Watering hits different now.
Outdoor heat dries out soil faster. That once-a-week routine? Might need to become every few days. Stick your finger in the soil—if it’s dry past the top inch, it’s probably time.

  • Humidity is a win.
One major perk of being outside is that the air is naturally more humid. Your tropical plants will love that—think bigger, perkier leaves and faster growth.

  • Keep an eye out for pests.
Outdoor life = more exposure. Check under leaves and around the soil weekly. If anything looks off, a gentle rinse or neem oil usually keeps things under control. Add some to your collection here!

Hope your Memorial Day was gentle and grounding. We’re carrying gratitude into the new season, honoring those we’ve lost, and leaning into the upcoming season with a little more green and a little more ease.
