Are Indoor Plants Hard to Kill?

The right plant for your space is at The Zen Succulent! Check out the easy plant selection here!

Indoor plants aren’t hard to keep alive—as long as you pick the right one for your environment and lifestyle. The key is to avoid treating all plants the same. Some like to stay moist, some need to dry out completely. But the good news? With a little bit of planning, you can set yourself (and your plants) up for success.

Three Tips to Keep Your Plants from Croaking:

1. Be realistic with your environment and lifestyle.

Some plants need more attention than others—whether it’s frequent watering, high humidity, or bright light. Before buying, think honestly about your space. If you’ve got low light and dry air, a fiddle leaf fig might not be the best fit. But something like a snake plant? That’s more your speed.

2. Use pots with drainage—or fake it smart.

Check out local businesses for artsy and functional pots. There is a pot out there that matches your aesthetic and preference.

I always recommend using pots with drainage holes. But if that’s not your jam, make sure the plant’s roots aren’t sitting in standing water. Add a drainage layer—about 1–2 inches of small river rocks or chunky material—before adding soil. You can also leave your plant in a nursery pot and just slip it into your decorative pot.

3. Do your research.

Seriously, use that phone or laptop! Figure out what kind of light your space gets and how often you’re realistically going to water. Look up humidity needs, growth habits, and light tolerance before you commit.

Before you call yourself a “bad plant parent,” consider this:

Maybe you just haven’t found the right plant yet. I truly believe the right plant is out there for you (or plants—because let’s be honest, you probably won’t stop at one). Do a little digging, give yourself grace, and be proud of figuring out what works for your lifestyle.
